MILTON TOWNSHIP — Two men were arrested this week in connection with burglaries that occurred last year.
Scott B. Billings Jr., 19, of Woodstock, and William A. Martin, 21, of Livermore Falls, face burglary charges for allegedly breaking into a Milton Township home in November and December 2010.
Billings is charged with two burglary counts, theft of a firearm and theft by unauthorized taking. Martin is charged with burglary, theft by unauthorized taking and criminal mischief. The burglary and theft of firearm charges are Class B offenses, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
According to a report by Maine State Police officer Kyle Tilsley, homeowner Charles Hopkins went to his home last weekend for the first time since last November. It had been broken into and items, including a safe, a .22-caliber Ruger rifle with a scope, a sofa, a coffee table and several DVDs had been stolen.
The house had also been damaged inside and out, with windows and mirrors broken, walls damaged and furniture turned over, the report stated.
While canvassing the neighborhood, Tilsley spoke with Billings, who said William Martin had bragged about breaking into the home. Billings admitted going into the home with Martin but denied stealing anything, Tilsley wrote.
On Monday, Tilsley arrested Martin on burglary and theft charges. Although his address is listed as Livermore Falls, he was living in a home across the street from Hopkins’ house, according to the report.
During a police interview, Martin said Billings and another man were involved in one of the burglaries, and that Billings was involved in both. He said Billings stole a safe and a gun.
Billings was arrested Tuesday. He told Tilsley that he sold the gun, according to the report, and that he and Martin broke into the safe with sledgehammers. He said the safe was empty.
Martin was released Wednesday afternoon on a Maine Pretrial Services contract, according to the Oxford County jail. Billings was still being held Wednesday.
