PERU — A special town meeting is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m. to vote on accepting a $10,000 grant to operate and maintain the former Peru Elementary School, selectmen announced Monday night.
There are no matching funds or other requirements for the grant.
The warrant will also including an article asking voters to authorize selectmen to relinquish management and control of the building to the Friends of the Peru Elementary School Committee.
There was considerable discussion among selectmen about both issues Monday night. Selectman Ed Ferland wanted assurance that the grant and he turnover to the committe would cost the town nothing.
Chairman Tim Holland said it would “cost the town zero dollars.”
“This is a good thing,” Selectman Laurieann Milligan said. “Let these people on this committee believe in something and allow it to grow to it’s potential.”
Ferland was adamant that no town funds would be used.
Selectman Rick Vaughn said he wanted a better plan in place in the future in case the grant was used up and the committee folded.
Milligan and Holland are both members of the Friends of the School Committee, but do not hold offices.
Town Clerk Vera Parent said she would set up a separate account for the grant.
“It will not be mixed with town funds,” she said.
In other business, the Planning Board requested direction on how to proceed on the sign issue at the Bus eatery on Greenwoods Road.
Ferland said the signs were on the owner’s property and he saw no issue. However, the Bus is located across the street from Worthley Pond and the Shoreland Zoning Ordinance does address signs that are within 250 feet of the shoreline.
Holland said he would speak to the owners and see what could be done to resolve the issue.
It was reported that Central Maine Power Co. said the town could save $600 a year by taking out the street lights at the blinking light at Main Street and Route 108.
The board acknowledged receipt of correspondence from Dwight Hines on public information access.
Some members of the board said they would try to attend a wind informational hearing in Sumner on Thursday, August 18 at the Hartford Sumner Elementary School at 6:30.
The board received a letter of resignation from the Deputy Clerk Liza Virgin, stating that budget cuts reduced her hours so it was not profitable for her to continue working.
After considerable discussion over cleaning costs for town office building, it was voted to have Vaughn continue as janitor at $13.25 an hour for 1½ hours per week.
