University of Southern Maine sophomore Zoe Barnes was named the Little East Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Year on Friday.

The Gray-New Gloucester grad broke the LEC championship meet record in both the shot put and discus last Saturday, with marks of 12.68 and 43.44 meters, respectively. Barnes ranks 16th in all of Division III with a season-best throw of 43.99 in the discus and her best toss of 13.02 in the shot put is 37th in the country. Those marks are both USM program records.

Barnes earned LEC First Team honors in both of her winning events. Edward Little grad Olivia Jalbert also received dual LEC First Team accolades after winning the high jump and long jump at the conference championship meet.

On the men’s side, Edward Little grad Jacob Jackson earned LEC Second Team honors after tying for second in the high jump at the LEC championship meet.

BASEBALL
UMBC 9, UMAINE 8: The Retrievers scored five runs in the sixth inning and held on for a win over the Black Bears in an America East baseball game on Friday in Orono.

Christian Easley had a home run, double and single with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead Maryland-Baltimore County (23-20, 12-7 AE).

For the Black Bears (23-16, 13-3), Nick White had a double and single with two runs scored and two RBIs.

SOFTBALL
MAINE SPLITS: Grace McGouldrick of Gorham set the University of Maine new single-season record for stolen bases with 31 as the Black Bears (13-36, 4-14 America East) split a doubleheader with Bryant (17-27, 5-12) on Friday in Orono.

Maine’s Jasmine Gray was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in Game 1 and Anna Margetis also drove in two runs, but Bryant erased a four-run deficit, rallying for a 5-4 win. McGouldrick had a stolen base in the second inning to set the record,

In Game 2, Alysen Reith pitched a three-hitter and Maine scored three runs in the fourth inning for a 3-0 victory. Katie Jo Moery broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single. Mariah Pearson followed with a two-run single.
