NORWAY — Edward F. Daigle, 86, formerly of Backkingdom Road in Mexico, died Monday, Aug. 22, at Stephen’s Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born in Rumford, May 23, 1925, a son of Anthony and Amy (Hickey) Daigle.

Ed was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School. Following graduation, he moved to Minnesota, and attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1945 with the 1st Division, having fought during the Gilbert Island, Marshall Island and Marianas Island Operations.

After the service, he was employed with Boeing in Santa Monica, Calif., for several years. He moved back to Rumford in the early 1950s.

Edward and his brother Joseph were the owners of Daigle’s Auto Body Repair Shop on Hancock Street in Rumford for more than 25 years. After selling the business, he was employed as an insurance adjuster.

He was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior. Ed was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Elks, Eagles, and the Le Parasseux Snowshoe Club.

He enjoyed singing and was once a contestant on the Ted Max Show in Milwaukee. He also enjoyed taking pictures and hunting.

Ed is survived by his three children, Cheryl Black of Rutland, Vt., Mark Daigle of Mexico and Jody Mayo of Concord, Va.; five grandchildrenl and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Beatrice (Chaisson) Daigle; two sisters, Pauline Young and Annie Theberge; and two brothers, Joseph and Raymond Daigle.
