AUGUSTA — The Auburn Running Club placed second in the team competition at the recent Maine Junior Olympic Track and Field Championship in Augusta.

Competing against 31 teams, the Auburn team had its 14th consecutive top-three team finish. That stretch has included seven state championships.

Poland defended its title this year, winning the championship with 433 points, Auburn was second with 348.5, Falmouth 252, Scarborough 191, and York with 188 to complete the top  five.

Auburn had more than 80 athletes competing in the championship, the most ever in the program’s history.

Coached by Tom Menendez, a nationally recognized race walk coach, the team scored many points in that event, including three state champions: Matthew Syphers in the 11-12 boys, Spencer Dunn in the 13-14 boys, and Morgan Knowlton in the 13-14 girls.

Other state champions for Auburn included triple winner Kristina Smith in the 13-14 girls’ 3,000, 1,500 and 800 meters, Kerri St. Denis in the 13-14 shot put, Anne Guadalupi in the 11-12 3,000, Caleb Yarnevich in the 9-10 javelin, and MacKenna Poisson in the 8-and-under high jump.

Two 400-meter relays also captured first place: The 8-and-under girls’ team of Savannah Boucher, Morgan Giard, Mia Morin and Cierra Shanon; and the 11-12 boys with runners, Brady Guimond, Isaac Smith, Bryce Leger and Camdan Poisson.

Athletes in the 8-and-under age group were very successful. Placing in the top three of their events were Sarah Brown (100), Savannah Boucher (javelin, racewalk), Aiden Charest (SP), Mia Morin (LJ), MacKenna Poisson (HJ, 800, 200) and Cierra Shannon (SP, racewalk).

In the 9-10 age group, placing among the top thee were: Sophie Bilodeau (racewalk), Leyla Davis (LJ), Cecilia Guadalupe (1,500, 800), Gabe Hastings (racewalk), Jacob Jackson (racewalk), Olivia Jalbert-Hodgdon (javelin) and Caleb Yarnevich (javelin).

In the 11-12 age group, athletes placing among the top three included Maddie Amero (javelin), Matt Syphers (racewalk) and Anne Guadalupe (800, 3,000).

In the 13-14 age group, the girls tied with Poland for first in that division. Those finishing in the top three in their events included Kristina Smith (800, 1,500, 3,000), Kerri St, Denis (shot put, triple jump, high jump), Ashleigh Jackson (pole vault), Kailey Norcross (racewalk), Morgan Knowlton (Racewalk), Spencer Dunn (racewalk), Jean David Hurd (long jump) and Jon Tuttle (800).

Bradley Morissette, 15, recorded several personal bests on his way to placing first in the 100, second in the triple jump and fourth in the long and high jumps.

The Auburn Running Club is a summer track and field program sponsored by the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department. The coaching staff this season included Tom Menendez, Carolyn Court, Nicole Court-Menendez and volunteer coaches Rebecca Hefty and Carl Schwinn. Several high school athletes also volunteered with the program.

Auburn Running Club welcomes children 6 to 14 years old from Auburn and area towns to participate in two evening practices and a meet each week during the summer.
