AUBURN — The Woman’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County will host a Tea & Tour at Two on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. The theme for this RSVP event is “Turn Back the Hands of Time.”
The menu for the Tea & Tour at Two will be a proper afternoon tea with cucumber, egg and chicken salad tea sandwiches, ginger scones and cranberry-orange scones and a variety of sweets. Highlights of the tour include the architectural splendor of the Horatio G. Foss mansion, more than 50 objects originally belonging to Horatio and Ella Foss, an outstanding silver collection and a fabulous porcelain collection.
An extensive collection of furniture, glassware, sculpture, portraits, prints and textiles tell the story of the early 20th century. The house, furnishings, and grounds are documented by an archival collection including the minutes of WLU board meetings, letters, books, bills and photographs.
Those taking the tour will hear the story of those who worked in the Lewiston-Auburn shoe industry in the late 19th and 20th centuries as part of the background of the Foss mansion. It was through the shoe industry that Horatio G. Foss made his fortune.
The Horatio G. Foss mansion is a valuable community and educational resource that brings to life the cultural and social history of the shoe industry, the Fosses and the Woman’s Literary Union. Download an RSVP form at www.womansliteraryunion.org. The cost for the event is $15 per person.
