JAY — A plastic tote left on a stove, which was accidentally turned on as new tenants moved into an apartment on Jewell Street, was set on fire Friday afternoon.

Candace Giles and her family were moving in to Schoolhouse Apartments at 26 Jewell St. when a plastic tote was put on the stove, Jay Assistant Fire Chief Michael Booker said. The tenants believe they accidentally hit a button on the stove and left to move more items in, he said.

Another tenant put out most of the fire with a fire extinguisher. Firefighters quickly arrived and carried the smoking tote outside and put an exhaust fan in the second floor window. The stove was damaged and there was a little smoke damage, Booker said.

Mutual aid from Farmington Fire and Rescue, Wilton Fire Department and a member of Livermore Falls Fire Department responded to the approximately 3:30 p.m. call, he said.
