LEWISTON — A Poland woman was recovering from a head injury Monday after losing control of her motorcycle in Manchester the previous day while on her way to a charity toy run.

Kathy Jesiolowski, 53, was riding with a group of about 50 other motorcyclists Sunday morning when a fellow biker clipped a construction barrel, knocking it into Jesiolowski’s path, a Kennebec County Sheriff’s Deputy told the Kennebec Journal. Jesiolowski was unable to avoid the barrel and was knocked to the ground along with her bike, the Kennebec Journal said.

Despite wearing a helmet, Jesiolowski suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, the Kennebec Journal said.

Jesiolowski was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon, according to the Morning Sentinel.

The group had been riding to Augusta to join the United Bikers of Maine’s annual toy run from the Augusta Civic Center to the Windsor Fairgrounds.

The toys collected at the 15-mile run are redistributed to children throughout the state by representatives of the United Bikers of Maine, Darrell Spears, the organization’s president, said.

The bikers collected more than 10,000 toys this year, Spears said, making it the largest toy run since the event’s inception 30 years ago.

There have been no other accidents related to the toy run in the three years since Spears became the group’s president, he said.
