International Dark Skies Week | April 8-15
This week kicks off with the Shadow of the Sun Festival celebrating the solar eclipse! RLHT has an activity planned for each day through Saturday. Here’s a taste of what’s planned!
Take part in our annual Light’s Out, Rangeley, where we encourage everyone to turn off non-essential lights for one hour from 8- 9 PM.
Learn to conduct your own home or camp lighting inventory to see if your light fixtures are dark-sky friendly.
Watch Losing the Dark and Defending the Dark Documentaries about light pollution issues worldwide and here in Maine.
Join the Globe at Night movement and become a citizen scientist! Measure a specific star’s brightness from your backyard to see how light pollution is affecting us over time.
Take a virtual tour of Rangeley’s night sky with the Northern Stars Planetarium’s Stellarium!
And of course, go stargazing on the RLHT’s Dark Sky Trail!
This winter the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust will maintain these trailheads:
Hatchery Brook Preserve
Bonney Point Conservation Area
Hunter Cove Wildlife Sanctuary
Hunter Cove Uplands Conservation Area
South Bog Conservation Area
EcoVenture Campus
These conservation areas are free for the public to access and are open from dawn to dusk.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
