Several Portland police officers armed with long guns confronted two groups at a Portland convenience store after responding to reports of a fight in progress Tuesday afternoon.

No shots were fired and no injuries were reported at the Cumberland Farms convenience store off Brighton Avenue, near Brighton Corner, Interim Assistant Chief of Police Robert Martin said.

A person who witnessed the confrontation said they saw at least six police cars and three or four police officers pointing their weapons at a suspect or suspects in the area near the gas pumps. The incident took place around 3:20 p.m.

On Tuesday night, Brad Nadeau, the spokesman for the Portland Police Department, said that the officers were responding to reports of a fight in progress between two groups of individuals on Brighton Avenue.

Nadeau said that both groups were threatening to use firearms, but no firearms were used. One of the vehicles involved in the fight was pulled over by officers at Cumberland Farms. Members of the department’s weapons and tactics team were training in the area and helped with the traffic stop.

Nadeau said that no arrests have been made and the investigation into what led to the incident is ongoing.
