PORTLAND — The Portland Symphony Orchestra’s PSO Pops! season will open with the voices of 80 midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy Men’s Glee Club on Saturday and Sunday, Oct.8-9.
The concert, featuring patriotic songs, Broadway tunes, classical showpieces and sea shanties, will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. PSO Music Director Robert Moody will conduct.
On the program is music from Bernstein’s “New York, New York,” to the Norwegian Sailor’s Chorus from Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman” and John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen” from “Saving Private Ryan.”
The U.S. Naval Academy Men’s Glee Club, under the direction of Dr. Aaron Smith, is the most active of the naval academy’s musical organizations and has achieved national prominence as one of America’s premier men’s choral ensembles. Recent appearances on network television include “The Kennedy Center Honors,” “The Today Show,” “The Early Show,” “Christmas in Washington” and “Good Morning, America.”
The academy’s sold-out concerts of Handel’s “Messiah” with the Annapolis Symphony are often broadcast nationally and internationally. Other recent notable appearances include the inaugural concert, “We Are One” performed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for a live audience of more than 500,000 and an internationally televised audience, the dedication ceremony of the National Pentagon Memorial, the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award and the commissioning of the George H. W. Bush Aircraft Carrier, CVN-77.
