FARMINGTON — A busy day for the opening of Farmington Fair Sunday followed by agriculture education day on Monday meant the usual fair traffic and parking issues for those around High and Maple avenues.
Police said they received a few complaints about parking on streets around the fairgrounds from people not able to get out of their driveways or able to get through, Detective Marc Bowering of the Farmington Police Department said.
An officer started handing out $20 parking tickets Monday morning, he said.
While parking is allowed on both sides of High Street, leaving a narrow path for through vehicles, parking is only allowed on one side of Maple Avenue.
A vehicle parked on the north side of Maple near the fairgrounds entrance Monday morning, where several school buses were turning into the fairgrounds, left traffic coming down from upper Maple Avenue without much room.
Drivers heading for the fair need to be aware of signs stating “no parking on this side of street” or “no parking from here to corner.” They shouldn’t park on sidewalks either, Bowering added.
People trying to save the $3 cost of parking on the fairgrounds could end up paying $20 for a parking ticket, Farmington Police Department secretary Rachel Heseltine said.
