FARMINGTON — Glenn B. Heath, 88, of Industry passed away on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 5, 1922, in Strong, the son of John C. and Marion W. (Presson) Heath. Glenn received his education in Farmington schools, graduating from the “new” Mallett Elementary school in 1937, and from Farmington High School in 1941. He earned athletic letters in basketball, track and skiing, being a member of one of Richard Gould’s first ski teams. He was also active in music and drama. He attended the University of Maine in Orono, prior to enlisting in the U.S Army Air Force, serving from 1943 to 1946. His duties included preparing bombers for the Pacific Theater in World War II.
In 1951, he married Margaret Knapp. He was in the retail clothing business on Broadway in Farmington for many years with Maurice Dill in Dill’s Mens’ Shop and later across the street in Glenn’s Mens’ Shop. Glenn climbed most of the tallest peaks in Maine, including walking the Knife Edge on Mt. Katahdin. Skiing continued to be one of Glenn’s favorite activities, being a member of the Farmington Ski and Outing Club, a charter member of the Sugarloaf Ski Club, giving him the opportunity to ski Mt. Washington, Sugarloaf and Bigelow with Amos Winter, Stubb Taylor and Odlin Thompson.
Other adventures included whitewater rafting on the Rio Grande and in New Zealand, hang gliding in Kitty Hawk, N.C., sailing along the coast of Maine and at Clearwater Lake, traveling 50 U.S. states and many other countries all over the world. He also enjoyed reading, photography, singing, camping, fishing and hunting.
Glenn was a member of Shorey Chapel in Allens Mills and an associate member of Ochlockonee Bay Methodist Church in Ochlockonee Bay, Fla. He was a member of both church choirs. Glenn and his wife were youth group leaders at the Henderson Baptist Church. He and Margaret were also active members of the Old South Congregational Church Choir and various church offices. Glenn taught a boy’s Sunday school class and was Scoutmaster of the church sponsored Boy Scout troop. He was the local chairman of the National Foundation for Infant Paralysis during the polio epidemic in Franklin County. He was also a member of the Maine Masonic Lodge No. 20.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Margaret; his son, Stephen; his son, Donald; grandchildren, Eric, Jennifer and Derek; and great-grandchildren, Mya Mae and Taegan.
He was predeceased by his parents and his stepmother, Grace Small Heath.
