BRUNSWICK — Bates College broke away from a halftime stalemate to beat Trinity College 74-68 in the semifinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship tournament Saturday at Bowdoin College.
The third-seeded Bobcats (22-4) advance to Sunday’s tournament final (12 p.m. tipoff) against host and top-seeded Bowdoin, which beat No. 4 Middlebury 61-54 in the other semifinal. During the regular season, the Polar Bears won at home 68-48 on Dec. 4 while the Bobcats won in Lewiston on Feb. 2, 72-57.
Morgan Kennedy paced the Bobcats with 23 points in Saturday’s win against the Bantams (19-7). Elsa Daulerio dropped in 16 points in the win and Alyson Kennedy finished with 13 points.
Indi DelRocco led Trinity with 22 points, while Emma Wax had 16 and Avery Marzo chipped in with 12 in the loss.
It was tied 28-28 at half before the Bobcats outscored the Bantams 15-12 in the third quarter and 31-28 in the fourth. Bates had eight points off turnovers and 10 second-chance points. Bates’ bench outscored Trinity’s 13-6.
BASEBALL
ST. MARY’S COLLEGE OF MARYLAND 13, BATES 6: Derrick Booker a was a homer shy of the cycle as he belted three hits and had an RBI in the Seahawks’ (1-1) win over the Bobcats (1-2) in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia.
Gavin Wathen had two singles and drove in two in the win while Chase O’Dell had two hits and an RBI.
Ben Genser had a double and brought home three runs for the Bobcats. Gibby Sullivan had two hits and an RBI. Chris Cimino and Dylan Azcarate each had doubles and Brandon Biggane drove in a run.
Nick Russo picked up the win on the mound, going five innings and striking out four while allowing just one hit. Diego Sarabia took the loss, going 3 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out five.
