Maine is transitioning this year from a closed primary system to a semi-open primary. Unenrolled voters will be able to participate in primaries. Voters enrolled in a party may only vote in that party’s primary.

Only the Democratic and Republican parties will hold primaries for the March 5 election. The Green Independent, Libertarian and No Labels parties have chosen not to hold primaries, and voters enrolled in one of those parties may not participate in the primary.

Enrolled voters do not have the option to select another party’s ballot unless they unenrolled or changed enrollment on or before Feb. 16. A voter must remain in a party for three months before changing parties or unenrolling.
