PARIS — The Oxford County Commission will hold a special meeting Friday morning to discuss and act on a petition from Mason Township residents concerning Tyler Road.

County Administrator Scott Cole said residents have submitted a petition asking that the county, acting as the municipal government in the unorganized territory of Oxford County, lay out a public road in place of the current Tyler Road, which was taken by eminent domain.

Use of Tyler Road became an issue in 2009 when two landowners challenged the county’s ownership of a mile-and-a-half section that runs through their properties. The U.S. Forest Service had purchased land accessible only by Tyler Road and needed the road widened and graded to accommodate timber trucks.

The landowners, Cameron Wake and Celina Adams of Kittery, said the county had abandoned the land and paid a surveyor to look into the issue. They filed a lawsuit in Oxford County Superior Court against the county government.

The county opted to take the road by eminent domain, and the commission and the landowners came to a settlement in June that Oxford County would purchase the strip of land on which the road runs and agreed not to make any major improvements that would disrupt the land.

The meeting is set for 7 a.m. Friday at the Oxford County courthouse and is expected to be brief.
