In a boys’ camp near Belfast is a Japanese prince and the son of China’s first president and whatever the relations of the two countries may be, these two boys are good friends. The Chinese boy is Ke Tu Yuam. His father, Yuam Shi Kai, was the first president of China. The Japanese boy is Prince Mishina from Tokyo.
50 Years Ago: 1974
The chairman of the Executive Council predicts the panel will approve the state’s acquisition of the Olson House in Cushing, made famous by artist Andrew Wyeth.
Harvey Johnson said Friday that he expects no serious opposition when the question goes before the seven-member panel Monday.
The weathered farmhouse overlooking the sea has been a favorite subject for Wyeth, who portrayed it in more than 200 paintings, including the widely acclaimed “Christina’s World.”
25 Years Ago: 1999
The seventh annual POW-MIA Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the POW-MIA Remembrance Bridge in Jay.
The United Bikers of Maine Franklin and Androscoggin County and their guests will begin their annual POW-MIA run of 22 miles at the Turner Plaza. They will form at 5 p.m. and begin the run around 5:30.
“Each year the United Bikers participate in the ceremony to bring attention to the issue and to help educate the community on the nation’s thousands of POWS and MIAS,” stated Auxiliary POW- MIA Chairwoman Holly Dube. “The bikers play a big part in our ceremony every year and the pride they have among themselves shows as they enter each town on their run. It is hoped that this year citizens in each community will follow the bikers to their destination, that being the POW-MIA Remembrance Bridge on the Riley Road in Jay.”
