PARIS — The annual Tree of Caring event is once again under way at the Maine Veterans’ Home. The project is sponsored by the Western Maine Veterans Advisory Committee (WMVAC).
“Although it is only October, we are busy selling bulbs for this year’s Christmas tree, and it will be the brightest yet. Sales started during the week of the Oxford County Fair in September and have stays quite steady,” said Joe Cooney, committee chairman.
Bulbs may be purchased for $5 each and may be in honor of someone or in memory of a loved one. All proceeds support the activities and special needs of the residents of the home. Supporting the activities program is the sole mission of WMVAC.
A replica of the Tree of Caring bearing recipients’ names is displayed in the lobby of the facility from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.
“It’s very special to have the Christmas tree in our yard. Our residents and families enjoy the bright lights throughout the holiday season,” said Veronica Casterline, administrative assistant.
The official lighting of the tree will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2. The public is welcome.
Bulbs may be purchased at the facility or by mailing a check made out to WMVAC and information to Richard Young, 159 Paris Hill Road, South Paris, ME, 04281, or to the facility at 477 High St., South Paris, ME 04281. For more information, call the facility at 743-6300 and ask for Casterline.
