100 years ago, 1911

A cow owned by C. R. Ellis, a Sabattus milkman, was struck by the Lewiston-Waterville car Thursday. One leg was broken and other injuries resulted which made it necessary to kill the animal. However it is said that no one at Sabattus wished to take the responsibility of killing the cow which appeared to be in great pain.

Finally George A. Allen, agent of the Androscoggin county humane society was notified of the condition of the cow. He immediately ordered the cow killed. Later in the evening his orders were carried out.

50 years ago, 1961

“An Evening with Basil Rathbone” is scheduled next week at Bates College for ticket holders in the college’s annual concert and lecture series. The noted actor of both stage and screen will make an appearance at the college chapel at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3.

Mr. Rathbone will give a dramatic presentation, reading from the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dylan Thomas, Shelley, Edgar Allen Poe, Housman, Browning, Elizabeth Barrett, William Shakespeare and others.

25 years ago, 1986

GRAY — Representatives of Cole Farms Dressing Corp. have asked the Planning Board for permission to use a barn and acreage across from Cole Farms Restaurant as a production site for their salad dressing.

The dressing is currently being made and bottles at Scholloterbeck and Foss Co. in Portland.
