WILTON — The theme of the annual Wilton Blueberry Festival will be “The “Rockin’ ’80s” The celebration is scheduled for Aug. 1 and 2.

The theme was chosen by the Wilton Blueberry Festival Committee, according to Renee Woodard, the town’s events coordinator.

The festival, always held the first Friday and Saturday of August, started in 1982 with a simple “Blueberry Church Bazaar,” according to the town’s website.

As the years passed, the festival has grown into a two-day event, and a time for people from town and around to gather, socialize and celebrate the heritage of the area.

The festival has drawn thousands of people to downtown Wilton for more than 30 years.

Besides organizing parades, runs and vendors for the event, the town is proposing to request proposals from professional pyrotechnics companies to put on the fireworks during the festival. The select board will take up the request at its meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the meeting room at the town office at 158 Weld Road in Wilton.
