FARMINGTON — Police say a Sangerville driver was distracted by another vehicle and failed to see a stopped van on the Wilton Road and crashed into it Tuesday morning.

Ryan Richardson, 21, was driving a black Ford F-250 truck east at about 8:30 a.m. and was watching a black vehicle behind him when he failed to see a vehicle, driven by Penny Meservier, 39, of Farmington, had stopped to make a left turn into the Franklin Journal/Sun Journal office.

Richardson told police the driver in back of him was tailgating and had made inappropriate hand gestures toward him. He was looking in his rearview mirror trying to move over a lane and did not see the Mazda van stopped in the road when he struck it. The black car passed the scene and drove off.

Meservier was checked by a NorthStar ambulance crew at the scene but was not transported to the hospital. Richardson was not injured and declined treatment, Farmington officer Wayne Drake said.

Both vehicles received significant damage but were driven from the scene.

Members of Farmington Fire and Rescue helped clear the scene.
