FARMINGTON — Cameras will be installed at the Community Center on Middle Street by Cunningham Security Systems of Falmouth after selectmen voted unanimously May 13 to accept their $11,596.59 bid.

Parks and Recreation Director Jennifer Savage said installation will occur during the roof renovation project that is expected to start June 2. The building and parking lot will be closed during the renovations, she noted.

Minuteman Security & Life Safety in Saco submitted a bid of $15,958.06, Savage said.

Cunningham previously installed the camera system at the Public Works garage and it has worked well, Savage said. She plans to talk with the company regarding a $50 monthly fee for camera maintenance to clarify what that is for since she can monitor them.

The system has the ability to pull up prior footage and see things in real time, Savage noted.

There have been instances where that would have been helpful, Town Manager Erica LaCroix said. The cameras are not a preemptive tool but more investigative, she said.

The town’s security consultant recommended some camera locations and Cunningham suggested others as well, LaCroix said. It may be advantageous to install cameras at other town buildings, she said.

There appears to be a need for the system, Selectman Dennis O’Neil said. It will be one of the cheapest things for the Community Center, he added.

Installing cameras at Hippach Field when the MPI (municipal partnership initiative) work is done on Main Street has been discussed to make things safe and secure when the fencing around the field is changed, Savage said. Having footage from more than one area would be good for safety, vandalism and security purposes, she said.

Community Center roof project update

A trailer for offices will be installed May 16 at Hippach Field, Savage said.

A meeting was held recently to make sure all the trusses are good to handle the 11,000 pounds of weight, Savage said.

A letter will be sent to the church, school and nearby businesses to make them aware of the closure of the parking lot starting June 2, he said.
