DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Poland Historical Society will host a presentation at the schoolhouse located at 1231 Maine St. in Poland on Wednesday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m.

Jim “Mac” McKinley will speak on the history of the East Poland Post Office. There have been at least seven post offices throughout the history of the town of Poland, maybe more. The post office in the Bailey Brothers Store in East Poland first opened in 1826 and remained in the same location for almost 200 years. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 998-5268. — David, Auburn

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Historical Societies of Mechanic Falls and Poland have been invited to a presentation and tour of the Advent Christian Camp on Saturday, June 14, at 10 a.m. The camp, located at 128 Lewiston Road in Mechanic Falls is associated with the Advent Christian Church, a denomination established in 1860 in Salem, Massachusetts. The Advent Christian Camp Meeting Association, then known as the Androscoggin Camp Meeting Association, purchased the current property in 1889 and camp meetings have been held there ever since.

More information can be found on their website http://www.maccma.net. All are invited to attend. The rain date for this event is June 28. Parking is on the left as you enter the grounds from Route 11/121. For more information call 998-5268. — David, Auburn

ANSWER: These are two interesting subjects you don’t hear about every day. Thank you to all the folks in our Maine towns who are keeping history alive and relevant. We appreciate you!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Does anyone know of a place where well-behaved dogs can go for a swim in the Auburn-Lewiston area? Thank you for all you do for the community. — No name, Auburn

ANSWER: I’m asking that all dog owners in Sun Spots Land chime in to assist me with answering this question. Perhaps you have a favorite spot that you wouldn’t mind sharing. Tacoma Lake and Pleasant Pond are coming to mind for me. There are places where you can pull off the road and your doggie could go for a little dip.

I know dogs can romp on the state park beaches in the off-season but not in the summertime.

If you have a place in mind but are unsure, call the town office where the body of water is located to double check on the rules. Be safe and have fun.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I had a doctor’s appointment in Brunswick this past Wednesday and received some not-so-good news. I’ll be okay but this was unexpected. Afterwards, I decided to stop at Five Guys on the Bath Road because I have never tried it. When I ordered my meal, the young man at the cash register told me it was free. I don’t know why. He just gave me my receipt with the number and a big smile. It really did make such a difference in my day and I enjoyed my burger and fries even more. I just wanted to share how much this meant to me. — Darlene, no town

ANSWER: We really do need to treasure these little moments of kindness, don’t we? I’m glad this gentleman was able to lift your spirits. Be well.
