What is presented by those supporting the voter ID referendum is a false choice. While an identification card to vote or register for voting is a legitimate thing, maybe in a large city, the referendum goes too far in limiting the ability to cast an absentee ballot. But that is never talked about, except as the question is worded on the ballot.
There have been two cases of voter fraud in Maine since 1982, according to the Heritage Foundation’s database. Both 15 years ago, both for voting twice, both persons convicted. Voter fraud is really a nonissue here with our small towns, careful vetting of voters and care taken of our voter lists. After all, we likely know the person checking our name off the role when we receive our ballot and they know us.
