Biddeford and Cheverus could have made it easy to vote in the initial Varsity Maine field hockey top 10 poll of the fall. But, no, they made it difficult.

The Class A powerhouses are expected to be among the two best teams in the state — if not the two best teams — and one of them probably would have staked their claim for the first No. 1 ranking when they faced off in the season opener. Instead, they tied 4-4, which made voters wish it was possible to pick two first-place teams.

The Tigers and the Stags ended up receiving two first-place votes apiece, and Biddeford is ranked first but only two points head of Cheverus.

Other voters couldn’t choose between the two, so they spent their first-place votes elsewhere. Skowhegan received the most first-place votes, three, and is ranked third.

The Varsity Maine field hockey poll is based on games played before Sept. 9, 2025. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
