Rumford police are investigating a fatal pedestrian-vehicle crash late Monday on Kerr Street, between Dunton Street and Forest Avenue.
Preliminary information indicates a 2012 Toyota Tacoma driven southbound by a 17-year-old Mexico boy struck a pedestrian in the road, Police Chief Tony Milligan wrote in a Facebook post on the department’s page.
The pedestrian was identified as Mark McCollough, 66, of Rumford. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Milligan wrote.
The Police Department along with Rumford Fire and Med-Care Ambulance personnel responded at 9:54 p.m.
Police are asking residents and business owners in the Kerr Street/Forest Avenue/Dunton Street area to review home security and dash-camera footage from 9:30-10:30 p.m. Monday. Anyone with video or information that may assist investigators is asked to contact the Police Department at 207-364-3449.
Milligan indicated the incident remains under investigation by a specialized traffic crash reconstructionist and Police Department investigators. Blood draws were obtained from the driver and the pedestrian to determine whether alcohol or drugs were factors.
Milligan said investigators will seek a search warrant to conduct a more thorough examination of the vehicle involved and its onboard systems.
A Rumford police detective will attend an autopsy expected later today at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta to determine the cause of death.
According to Milligan, there is insufficient evidence to support any criminal charges or to make any findings of exactly what happened. The identity of the juvenile driver is not being released at this time.
No additional details will be released while the investigation is ongoing, Milligan wrote, and further updates will be provided when appropriate.
