DEAR SUN SPOTS: USM Occupational Therapy Clinic is offering “A Matter of Balance” class that is award-winning, evidence-based, and designed to manage concerns about falls and increase activity levels.
If you are someone who has a fear of falling and/or has fallen in the past, this class is designed for you. It’s not an exercise class, but there is an exercise component. This is offered at University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn campus at 51 Westminster St. in Lewiston every Monday afternoon for eight weeks from Monday, Oct. 20, through Monday, Dec. 8, from 1-3 p.m. You need to commit to every session as each class builds upon the prior class. There is no fee.
If you’re interested, please reach out to me at email: [email protected] or call 753-6677. — Robina, no town
ANSWER: These classes are offered periodically and are a valuable opportunity for our senior community. Take advantage of this free series before winter comes with its icy sidewalks and snow-covered roads. You’ll gain tips on how to navigate more safely, strengthen your body, and more.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: We hardly believe it’s that time again! Continuing our tradition of holding our annual Christmas fair on the first weekend of November, Mexico Congregational Church, UCC (“Green Church”), at 163 Main St., will hold its fair on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The fair will feature a table of handcrafted crafts and gifts; a bake sale that includes containers of comfort foods; and attic treasures with puzzles, books and household items.
An array of raffles will offer a handcrafted wall rack with picture frames, a group of gift cards from area businesses, and many items in the ever-popular brown bag raffle.
Free coffee will be offered all day and lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The menu includes corn chowder with a biscuit and apple crisp for dessert.
The church’s phone number is 364-8603. Thank you so much for your help in promoting all of our events, Ms. Sun Spots! — Carol, Mexico
ANSWER: It’s my pleasure to include this in all the enjoyable events coming up. And you’re right, I can’t believe we’re gearing up for the winter holiday season either.
For all those involved with organizing and volunteering at these special fairs and other fundraisers, the rest of us appreciate you! Remember, though, to pace yourselves and give yourselves some tender loving care in moments between all the hard work. Shine bright but don’t burn out!
(Editor’s note: The Sun Spots in the Friday, Oct. 10, edition of the Sun Journal featured a letter from a reader suggesting people help clean up Sabattus Pond while water levels are low. Such action would require state permits and is not condoned by the Sabattus Pond Watershed Project.)
This column is for you, our readers. It is for your questions and comments. There are only two rules: You must write to the column and sign your name. We won’t use it if you ask us not to.
