Two people received minor injuries on Tuesday morning after an SUV collided with a tractor-trailer truck on state Route 4 in Farmington, just past Peter Tyler’s Excavating in Farmington, not far from the Strong line.

Margaret Putnam, 23, of Bangor, was driving south on the road, also known as Fairbanks Road, in a 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan when she crossed the center line into the path of an unloaded 2000 International tractor-trailer truck going north, driven by Brian Snider, 21, of Jackman, police Chief Kenneth Charles said in an email. Snider was unable to avoid the collision, he said.

Putnam’s vehicle came to final rest on the southbound side of the road with extensive damage.  Putnam suffered minor non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by an ambulance to MaineHealth Farmington Hospital for evaluation.

Snider’s vehicle struck a guardrail on the northbound side of the road and came to final rest with significant damage. Snider suffered minor non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Farmington hospital for evaluation, Charles said. None of his passengers were injured.

The crash was reported at 9:27 a.m. Route 4 was temporary closed and opened to one lane for several hours.

The truck is owned by Northern Maine Community College Commercial Driving Academy in Presque Isle.

Snider is a student driver and was accompanied by his driving instructor, Charles wrote. Three other adult passengers were also in the truck at the time.

The SUV’s nose was pushed into a ledge on the side of the road and debris lined the road.

Farmington Fire Rescue Chief Tim Hardy called for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection because he believed the truck’s fuel tank might rupture when it was pulled from the side of the road.
