Elnora “Norie” Mae Clement

AUBURN – Elnora “Norie” Mae Clement, 89, of Durham, passed away peacefully on Oct. 27, 2025.

Norie was born in Livermore Falls on Dec. 12, 1935, the eldest daughter of Thomas and Madeline (Wing) Wetmore. She grew up in North Chesterville and graduated from Farmington High School in 1954. She had a lifelong love for learning, knowing at a young age that she wanted to be a teacher.

Norie was proud to have put herself through college, working at J.J. Newberry’s to pay tuition. She graduated with a teaching degree from Farmington State Teachers’ College in 1958 and spent the next 32 years as an elementary school teacher, teaching in South Paris, Lisbon, and Durham, where she spent most of her career. Norie retired from full-time teaching in 1990. Not quite ready to stop teaching, she spent the following three years as a substitute teacher, until the birth of her first granddaughter in 1993. Once fully retired, Norie devoted the next several years to caring for her grandchildren.

Norie married her husband of 65 years, Philip S. Clement, on June 25, 1960. They spent their life together in Durham where they raised their two children, Thomas and Penny. As a family, they enjoyed travelling to Nova Scotia and spending time at family camps in Mere Point and Moosehead. Later in life, Norie and Philip enjoyed time spent together with their grandchildren, Peter, Amber, Patrick, and Brandon, as well as their great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Savage. Norie was proud of her family and never missed an opportunity to show her support for them. She and her husband travelled annually to Maryland to visit their son and his family, sometimes with their cat, Shadow, in tow. Norie enjoyed time spent with her sister, Carol, cheering on her nephew as he raced at Oxford Plains Speedway. During her travels, she completed many knitting projects, including personalized Christmas stockings for each family member.

Norie was a long-time member of the Lisbon Falls Baptist Church. She spent many years as the church treasurer and cherished the time she spent helping in the nursery and the many summers she was involved with Vacation Bible School. For a time, her and her husband enjoyed attending school basketball games together, chatting with church friends and cheering on the Falcons.

Norie is survived by her husband, Philip, and their loyal cat companion, Elvis; her children, Thomas (Cynthia) Clement of Wiscasset and Las Cruces, N.M., Penny Williams of Durham; her grandchildren, Peter (Onyx) Clement of Ranson, W.Va., Amber (Benjamin) Bellavance of Scarborough, Patrick Clement of Reston, Va., and Brandon (Ashley) Williams of Windham; and her great-grandchildren, Charlotte Williams and Savage Clement.

She was predeceased by her parents; and her sisters Carol Taylor and Nancy Wetmore.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Lisbon Falls Baptist Church, 555 Lisbon St., Lisbon Falls, on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m.
