LEWISTON — Police arrested a 19-year-old local man Tuesday night after a witness reported hearing a single gunshot on Sabattus Street.

Demonte Powell, 19, was arrested on a charge of reckless conduct with a firearm after police searched a vehicle in the area of Sabattus and Oak streets moments after the reported shooting.

Police said they also recovered two firearms and a spent shell casing.

At about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police were called out after a report of a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot at Sabattus and Oak streets. A witness told police that the occupants of the vehicle were pointing a green laser at surrounding buildings.

Just as the witness stepped into her apartment, she heard a single gunshot, police said.

When police arrived, the vehicle was still in the parking lot with four people, including Powell, inside.

He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail, where he remained on Wednesday.

Police said there was no indication that anyone had been struck by gunfire. The case is still being investigated.
