Chesley “Chet” Norman Abbott
MEXICO – Chet a father, a skilled craftsman, and a man whose spirit could never be tamed, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025 at the age of 76. Born in Rumford on Dec. 23, 1948, Chet was the son of Norman Abbott and Arlene Goff.
Chet was educated at Mexico high school. Chet then went on to serve in the Army. Upon returning home to Maine, he met and married Clarita “Kippy” Hayden in 1970. Though their marriage ended after a few years, they had two children together. Later in life, he had three more children with Suzanne Gallant. Chet loved his role as a father, and grandfather.
For all of his career Chet worked in construction, specializing as an Iron Worker. He began his working life at the Boise Cascade in Mexico before traveling extensively with Daniel’s Construction, taking him to states like Alabama, South Carolina, and Virginia. He eventually returned to Maine, where he worked for Knowles Construction, C.S. Construction, and Cianbro.
Chet was known for his years on the open road. He held a lifelong passion for his bike, the roar of the engine, and the freedom of the ride, which perfectly mirrored his independent spirit. He was a memorable and respected member of the Exile Motorcycle Club, where he held nearly every position during his long tenure as an active member.
He is survived by his sister Peggy Abbott Marcoux and her husband Gerald Maroux of Dixfield, his brother Micheal Abbott and his wife Penny of Cornville; children Christopher Abbott, of Mexico, daughters Allison Abbott and her partner James Hamner of Rumford, daughter Melanie Prescott and her husband Barry of Dixfield, sons Matthew Gallant and partner Wanda Mcalister of Casco, and Jeremy Abbott of Mexico; his grandchildren, Melissa Mikkonen, Cody Abbott, Marissa Kimball, Hayden Abbott, Nyla Abbott, Serena Mendez, Marisa Mendez, Trenton Davenport, Nicholas Davenport and Noah Prescott; great grandchildren, Carter, Mason, Stella, Wilder, Sutton, Archer, Vera and Oliver.
He was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Arlene Abbott; siblings, Donna Joy Abbott Rouse, Kenneth H. Abbott, James Christopher Abbott, Joanne Marie Abbott, Dennis Abbott
At his request there will be no funeral service. There will be a celebration of life at the American Legion 184 Congress St., Rumford, Friday Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. Arrangements by Thibault Remembrance Center, 250 Penobscot St. in Rumford, 364-4366.
