With two parents who are veterans, 9-year-old Tim Kamilewicz said planting American flags at school means a lot to him.

“A lot of people served and a lot of people didn’t come back. I want to handle the flags with respect. The flags are part of this country,” the Crescent Park Elementary School student said.

Third-grade teachers Kathy Chaisson, Taylor Beliveau and Jenn Chafin, along with their combined classrooms of about 35 students, planted flags Monday around the perimeter of the circular garden in front of the school on Crescent Lane.

The third graders raised $750 through flyers they created for the Disabled American Veterans organization in their Field of Flags fundraiser.

Chafin said the students are learning about Disabled American Veterans and flag etiquette in conjunction with their social studies unit on being responsible citizens and community members.

As they finished planting flags, one student asked Chafin if they could do it again next year.

“We are the ‘Founding Field of Flags Members,’” said Hayden Brooks, noting that after 10 years the garden should be filled with flags.
