An 85-year-old Durham man died Tuesday after he was hit by a car while crossing the road to check his mailbox.

Peter Lowe was hit around 5 p.m. by an SUV driven by a Freeport woman at the intersection of Royalsborough and Smith Farm roads in Durham, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office. He died at the scene.

Investigators said he was wearing dark clothing and the area had no street lighting.

The crash is still under investigation.
