LEWISTON — A local man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison on a charge that he was found in possession of a handgun after having been previously convicted of a felony.
Kulmiye Abukar Idris, 35, of Lewiston, was sentenced on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Portland.
Idris was arrested in January after Lewiston police pulled him over for traffic violations downtown and found a handgun inside his car.
Because Idris had previously been convicted in 2024 for gross sexual assault, he was prohibited from possessing firearms.
The federal sentence for the gun violation will follow the 42-month state prison sentence Idris is already serving for gross sexual assault.
The rape conviction stemmed from a 2022 case during which Idris was accused of sexually assaulting a woman who had passed out at a party.
