1. Cheverus (10-0)

The Stags were supposed to be vulnerable. Yup, that was a good one. Scarborough and Deering are alternating knee-slaps and face-palms over that pearl of conventional wisdom.

2. Leavitt (10-0)

The Hornets-Cougars winner gets to play the Stags next week, right? C’mon, everybody, make this happen. I’ll even buy a ticket.

3. Lawrence (10-0)

Shaun Carroll and Spencer Carey stayed relatively healthy, and the Bulldogs ended a three-year playoff jinx. Bangor at home might not scare them any more than Brunswick or Messalonskee did.

4. Mt. Blue (9-1)

To answer Whitehouse’s rhetorical question last week: If everybody on all three teams were healthy, I think the Cougars would win that tournament. But they’re stuck in the one with Leavitt.

5. Thornton (9-1)

Being one yard better than Cheverus will be miles tougher than the same assignment against South Portland. But give the Trojans credit for a being a factor in the Western A discussion every year.

6. Wells (10-0)

Mountain Valley couldn’t steal the Paulie and Louie Show last time they made this trip. McDonough and DiTomasso would be enough to carry a team to the Class B state title most years.

7. Bangor (8-2)

Cody Chapman is officially the best player in the state whose name is misspelled on his own school’s roster. Next year you might be able to drop the second half of that sentence.

8. Mountain Valley (9-1)

’House is approaching his pick for this game with truth and sound logic. I’ve seen the movie too many times. I will believe the Falcons are second-best when the horn sounds and somebody proves it.

9. Yarmouth (10-0)

Hate putting Class C teams this high just because some good Class A teams are done. Really, really do. But the Clippers (30-1 in their last 31 games; three straight regional finals appearances) have earned it.

10. South Portland (7-3)

The Riots aren’t going away. Losing last week probably saved them the indignity of a butt-kicking this week. Let the off-season lifting program begin.

Player of the Week — Jordan Hersom, Leavitt. The Hornets’ senior quarterback passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more in a 47-22 semifinal rout of Hampden.
