Mary Lee (Rogers) Barnard

AUBURN – Mary Lee Rogers Barnard, 91, passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion to those dearest to her. For Mary, family was the foundation of a well-lived life. Holiday gatherings—Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the Fourth of July—were cherished traditions that united generations through laughter, shared meals, and lasting memories. Her gentle strength and generous spirit nurtured bonds that remain strong today.

Born March 17, 1934, in Natick, Mass., Mary Lee was the daughter of George Marshall and Lydia Webber Rogers. She graduated at the top of her class from Natick High School and earned her degree from Bates College in 1956. The following year, she completed her training at the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston before beginning her professional career as a secretary at the United Nations and later at Columbia University in New York City, N.Y.

In 1960, Mary married Kenneth Barnard. Together they settled in Auburn, Maine, where they raised their three children, Karen, Chuck, and Amy. Mary served as a librarian at Fairview Elementary School and was an active member of High Street Congregational Church as well as several civic and service organizations. Following retirement, she and Ken lived in Gorham, Orono, and later Albuquerque, N.M. before returning to Maine. Their 63-year marriage was one of enduring love and companionship.

Mary is survived by her brother, George (Judy) Rogers; her children, Karen (Andrew) Choate, Charles Barnard, and Amy (Butch) Baxter; her nephew, George (Pat) Rogers; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A service of remembrance will be held in 2026 at the convenience of the family.
