President Trump recently called a Somali immigrants “garbage.” Not long before that, he called a female reporter “piggy.” How revolting that we have a president who talks like this, who uses such disgusting language to describe God’s precious creations.
According to press reports, activists and community leaders have called on elected officials to stand up for the Somali community. Steve Collins expressed outrage in a recent column (“Somalis are not ‘garbage’ and Mainers should be outraged,” Dec. 3). I’m disappointed that church leaders haven’t condemned the attack as well, at least not publicly. Have we become so desensitized that it didn’t register?
A review of the headlines and websites of Maine’s major denominations fails to reveal any mention of the attack. One can only wonder how much it would take to provoke a reaction.
Where is the so-called “red line?” If it isn’t calling people “garbage,” where is it?
