A wind-driven mid-morning fire destroyed a service garage and the equipment inside, including a semitruck, Turner’s fire chief said Friday.
The building is owned by the Hood Farm, Chief Steve Michaud said. Firefighters from several towns responded to the maintenance facility at 426 Fish St. in Turner.
The building was engulfed in flames when about 40 firefighters from several towns responded, he said.
The fire, reported at 10:42 a.m., caused some tires in the garage to pop, Michaud said, which some people may have thought were explosions.
Also in the garage was a manure spreader, forklift and other farm equipment.
“It’s a total loss,” he said. “It was 100% a defensive fire. We knew we were not going to be able to save it.”
Fire departments from Leeds, Greene, Buckfield, Monmouth, Sabattus, Wales, Canton, Jay and Livermore also responded. No one was injured.
“It was tough one to put out. It was a very wind-driven fire,” Michaud said. Many fire truck tankers were needed to shuttle water to the scene.
The Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, Michaud said, adding, “Right now it is undetermined.”
