With Maine entering its first primary season, that includes both open primaries and ranked-choice voting, we have no shortage of candidates or good ideas. But I can’t say we have many who know how to turn their ideas into something real. That’s why I’m supporting Hannah Pingree for governor — she does.

I served with Hannah in the Legislature, and even then she stood out for her rare ability to build coalitions that wouldn’t logically exist. And that’s what moves policy. Not ideas. Not speeches. But coalitions.

Her leadership on the nation’s first ban on toxic chemicals in children’s products is a perfect example. That bill passed with strong bipartisan support because Hannah kept widening the circle, inside and outside the State House, until success became the obvious outcome. That same approach is likely why the Maine League of Conservation Voters, for the first time in its history, is endorsing in a gubernatorial primary — endorsing Hannah Pingree.

Hannah understands how government actually works. She knows which levers matter, which dead ends to avoid and how to move state government toward workable solutions. And on top of all that, she is not afraid to tackle the big, thorny issues — housing, health care, climate — that demand so much more than speeches.

Most importantly, her effectiveness comes not just from skill and dogged determination, but from integrity and a mission-driven commitment to Maine’s future. Hannah Pingree is an experienced, inspired builder — and the right leader for this moment.
