I am heartbroken by the news of another child’s death in such a tragic circumstance in Maine. I know that parents, grandparents, and those who work with children have been holding them closer and watching over them with increased care. My prayers go out to the family and to the bus driver involved in this horrific event.
I have followed the story, and I appreciated WLBZ’s compassionate decision to withhold the driver’s name until more information emerged. I am very disappointed that this newspaper did not make the same choice. It seems to lack compassion for this person. The driver will carry the weight of this tragedy for life and deserves as much privacy as possible, especially as this appears to have been an accident, not neglect or criminal intent. I chose not to read beyond the first paragraph of the story; the headline was enough.
This person deserves anonymity to grieve privately. Unfortunately, there are those who will be quick to condemn. If evidence of criminal activity or neglect arises, then revealing names would be justifiable. However, there is such a thing as too much information, and responsible journalism should be a guiding principle.
