Ryan Jackson was born and raised in Rockland, and lived there for more than 35 years. In 2024, he moved a stone’s throw away to Thomaston.

Jackson is the events and experience coordinator at one of Rockland’s crown jewels, the Strand Theatre. We asked him to list his five favorite things about the town.

Where do you like to eat?

It’s often so hard to choose, but I would definitely have to give a shout out to Honey’s Fried Chicken Palace, in Thomaston. It’s hands down the best fried chicken sandwich I’ve ever had, and the wings they just started serving up are extraordinary. They’re big, creative and every single bite gets you your money’s worth. Worth the venture to their sweet location.

Where do you go for a drink?

Ada’s Kitchen is always top-notch. Some of the best bartending and service you can get as far as an evening out here in Rockland. The atmosphere and the staff is fantastic, and it won’t break your wallet!

The Rockland Breakwater itself is just under a mile long and took 18 years to build. It was begun in 1881 and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from locally quarried granite. (Michele McDonald/Staff Photographer)

Where do you go to connect with nature?

The Breakwater. It’s just the best walk to take on a beautiful day here in the Midcoast, and it gives you the best view of the area, while taking in the sea breeze and fresh air. Worth the mile it takes you to walk it.

Where do you go to shop local?

Loyal Biscuit Co. As a beloved pet owner, it’s nice to shop locally for the best quality  food/treats/toys rather than big box. The staff is always so kind, and it’s very convenient having it right downtown.

What’s a hidden gem in Rockland?

The pizza at South End Grocery. Can’t beat the price, it’s the best handmade pizza, and just an unbeatable pie all around. Legend has it that it has secret recipes from a once reputable pizza place that existed here in the Midcoast, and who am I to not keep that secret going right to my stomach!
