FALMOUTH— Jake Minella knew the Bowdoin men’s hockey team had to get going in the third period Saturday night in the final of the Lobster Pot tournament.
Minella helped spark a four-goal third period after the Polar Bears were outshot 21-7 through two periods, and Bowdoin beat the University of New England 6-2 to capture the inaugural title at Falmouth’s Family Ice Center.
“It was pretty special, I mean, kind of like the D-III version of the Beanpot, first ever one,” Minella said. “…We are happy to come away with the first-ever win.”
Bowdoin goalie Jacob Osbourne stopped 31 shots and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. He made 23 saves in a 5-0 win over Southern Maine in the first round on Friday.
“I felt like my preparation was really good,” Osbourne said. “I just felt ready. I felt, even though we got down in the second, I was able to keep my focus; that’s what led to the win.”
Minella scored 2:21 into the third period with an assist from Jayson Alegria to give the Polar Bears a 3-2 lead. Gabe Shipper extended the lead 82 seconds later.
UNE, ranked seventh the latest USCHO.com Division III poll, pulled goaltender Harrison Chesney (14 saves) for an extra attacker with 5:27 left. After a couple icing infractions, UNE’s Drew Olivieri won an offensive zone faceoff so forcefully that the puck rolled into the empty net at the other end of the ice. Michael Dinges, who took the faceoff for Bowdoin, was credited with the goal.
UNE coach Kevin Swallow hoped the extra skater would create offensive chances.
“All year, we’ve been very good with the extra attacker; our power play is usually one of the top in the country,” Swallow said.
Justin Wright added an empty-net goal with 1:54 left.
Bowdoin trailed 2-1 in the second period before Aidan Lyons scored with 2:03 left to tie the game.
“That’s a massive goal,” Bowdoin coach Ben Guite said. “After being under siege for a whole period and being able to go in the locker room (tied), it was such a boost in confidence for guys. And it’s been something all season where guys have been finding the right time to score, and it’s been huge.”
Bryce Bollman gave the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead in the first period. Mike Tersoni and Nathan Chickering scored 17 seconds apart in the second period to put the Nor’easters in front.
“Oh no, they took it to us in a big way,” Guite said. “We talked about, they’re an incredible team and we talked a lot about bending and not breaking, we were pretty close to breaking, but we definitely stuck in there. I was really proud of the fact that we didn’t quit, and we came back and we did a good effort in the third.”
Colby wins consolation game
Colby Brown scored with under five minutes remaining in the third period to give Colby a 4-3 victory over Southern Maine in the consolation game.
Matthew MacDonald scored twice for Colby, while Auburn’s Reese Farrell added a goal. Mules goalie Adam Costley made 23 saves.
Ben Aucoin, Ethan MacDuff and Kayde Kinaschuk scored for the Huskies. USM goalie Loic Morin stopped 37 shots.
