Farmington-based clothing manufacturer Origin is getting a lot of attention since images of captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro wearing one of their blue hoodies started circulating over the weekend.
Peter Roberts, Origin’s founder and CEO, reposted the photos on Instagram and Facebook, where they had received more than 63,000 likes as of Monday morning.
“Why is this dude wearing a Origin patriot blue hoodie?” Roberts asks in an Instagram post. He explains that the Origin logo is the “wave of freedom,” and deducing that a DEA agent gave Maduro the hoodie after landing in a cold New York City.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured Saturday in Venezuela following a large-scale strike by the U.S. military. They were brought to New York to face criminal charges related to a federal indictment accusing them of a role in narco-terrorism conspiracy.
Since then, a number of photos of the deposed leader have come into public view, including several of Maduro wearing the blue Origin hoodie.
In one of those photos, a seated and handcuffed Maduro is seen giving two thumbs up, which Roberts says tells him Maduro “liked the fabric.” He jokingly says the DEA agent likely told Maduro that he was “going to feel the fabric of freedom on American soil.”
Origin’s founder says they are now taking preorders for the patriot blue Origin hoodie, which is made in the company’s Asheboro, North Carolina, factory, and will be available in the spring.
Marketing Director Phil Adams told the Sun Journal on Monday that they have been slammed with calls and inquiries for the patriot blue hoodie, saying it is their top-selling item now, with thousands of preorders received for the $79 item by Monday.
Roberts and his partners started the company in 2011 — clearing land in Farmington and building a 7,000-square-foot factory with the goal of bringing back manufacturing that had been lost to overseas competitors.
An old machinery dealer found an antique loom that had been abandoned on the top floor of the Bates Mill complex in Lewiston. Roberts and his team hauled the loom off to Farmington along with two Singer sewing machines from World War II.
Today the company employs more than 400 people at factories in Maine and North Carolina and boasts its products are entirely “made in the USA.”
The blue Origin hoodie is not the only garment getting more exposure because of the raid and arrest of Maduro.
The former Venezuelan strongman was also seen in a grey, Nike Tech Fleece tracksuit after his capture in a photo posted by President Trump on his Truth Social platform. Demand for what is now called the “Maduro fit” and “Maduro grey” outfit reportedly quickly sold out at many outlets and online, especially in larger sizes.
