Walk and skate at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester

NEW GLOUCESTER — Pineland Farms is hosting a series of Women’s Hike Nights as well as open free skating at the farm.

The hikes will take place monthly, starting Wednesday, Jan. 7, and continuing on Feb. 4 and March 4. All hikes are from 4-6 p.m.

Starting at the Pineland Market & Welcome Center at 15 Farm View Drive, the hikes are for ages 18 and older, $5 per person, and preregistration is required.

Staff will lead hikers on a 1- to 1.5-hour moderate-level hike along the farm’s trails. If conditions allow, the hike will be with snowshoes. Snowshoes will be provided, but hikers are welcome to bring their own poles.

If trail conditions are not suitable for hiking or snowshoeing, the hike will be along Pineland roadways. Required gear includes waterproof and warm footwear, gloves, a hat, and layers to stay comfortable, as well as a water bottle and headlamp or flashlight.

Pineland is also offering free ice skating from 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. on the rink at the great lawn near the tennis courts. For more information on Pineland Farms go to pinelandfarms.org.

Dance with the Twitchell Hill Fiddleheads in Lewiston

LEWISTON — Trinity Commons at 247 Bates St. will be the place for some contradancing with the band Twitchell Hill Fiddleheads on Friday, Jan. 9, from 7-10 p.m. . Hannah Chamberlain will be calling the dance.

No experience or partner needed. All dances are taught and led. A beginners lesson starts at 7 p.m. with dancing starting at 7:30 p.m. 

The price is a sliding scale: adults $15-25, teens and students $5, children 12 and younger free. Organizers say “Pay what you can! We’d love to dance with you!”

Learn to tie some flies for free in Freeport

FREEPORT — L.L.Bean is hosting a free series of fly-tying classes for beginners and intermediate level Wednesday, Jan. 7, and continuing weekly on Wednesdays. Classes are from 5-8:30 p.m.

The classes will take place at the L.L.Bean Hunting and Fishing Store, 95 Main St.

The beginner class will go from 5-6:30 p.m. followed by an intermediate class from 7-8:30 p.m. Registration opens one week prior to each class at 8 a.m. on llbeaneventbrite.com. No experience necessary. All materials provided free.

Roll with some Rachmaninoff at Bates College chapel

LEWISTON — The Trinity Commons Oasis of Music performance series will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 12:30 p.m. at the Bates College Gomes Chapel on College Street.

Violist Nathan Hillman and pianist Yilin Chi will perform the “Cello Sonata Opus 19” of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Admission is free, with donations accepted.

The series returns to Trinity Commons on Jan. 14.

Enjoy music of the Sufis in Freeport

FREEPORT — The Maine Middle Eastern Orchestra will perform Saturday, Jan. 10, at Meetinghouse Arts featuring a special program called “The Music of the Sufis.”

The program, from 7-8:30 p.m., will explore the mystical traditions of Sufism through sacred Egyptian dance music, devotional hymns, and folk melodies from Turkey.

The orchestra is made up of music faculty members from Berklee, Bowdoin, Bates and Colby colleges, as well as musicians from the world-renowned National Arab Orchestra, New York Arabic Orchestra, DaPonte String Quartet, Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble, Seyir Duo and the Casco Bay Tummlers.

Cost is $25 in advance, $30 at the door, $15 for students. However, organizers note: “Financial barriers shouldn’t prevent anyone from experiencing the arts. Please know that our Arts Access Fund is available to help ensure everyone can attend.”

Meetinghouse Arts is in the First Parish Church Congregational United Church of Christ of Freeport at 40 Main St.
