CARTHAGE – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frank Scott Hutchinson III, or as he was known to many, “Sonny”. He departed this world on Jan. 3, 2026, in his beloved hometown of Carthage, Maine, after a long illness with lymphoma. He lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Born in Carthage, July 1935, Frank was the cherished son of Frank Scott Hutchinson II and Flora Swan Hutchinson.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Katie Benessa Hutchinson; as well as his parents; and siblings Gary, Daveen, Gail, Carol, Francis, Nancy, Barry, and a very young baby brother.
Frank’s passing leaves a profound void in the lives of his family and friends, but his spirit will continue to shine brightly through the countless lives he touched.
Frank was united in marriage to Fay Evangeline Virgin on June 16, 1961, at the Carthage Union Church. They shared an enduring love for 64 wonderful years. Together, they raised a beautiful family, which includes sons Frank Scott Hutchinson IV and his wife Stacie, Jason Hutchinson and his wife Allison, daughters Amy Hutchinson, and Carrie Tacheny and her husband Alan. He was a proud grandfather to Amelia Wynne, Seth Tacheny, Zoe Herrin, Scott Thomas Hutchinson, Samantha Hutchinson, Nathan Hutchinson, Noah Hutchinson, Elias Hutchinson; and, three great-grandchildren, Caleb and Silas Tacheny, and Jeanine Herrin. Frank is also survived by his siblings Lee, Richard “Dickie”, David, Jan, Jon, Judy, and Laurel, all of whom will carry on his legacy of love and strength.
Frank’s journey through life was marked by a thirst for knowledge and service. He attended Carthage Elementary School, graduated from Dirigo High School in the class of 1954, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Arizona at Tucson, graduating Cum Laude. His dedication to education continued as he served as an English teacher in various locations, including Lincoln, Mexico, Rumford, and Eastport. He also coached high school cross-country, inspiring young athletes with his passion for fitness and competition.
In addition to his teaching career, Frank served his country honorably in the United States Air Force as a radar technician from 1955 to 1959. His work experiences were diverse, including roles as a millwright for Oxford Paper, carpentry, and even working in the Maine woods. Frank concluded his professional journey working for the State of Maine’s Parks and Waterways, where he contributed to the enjoyment and preservation of Maine’s natural beauty.
Frank was a passionate outdoorsman, with a deep love for the Maine woods, lakes, rivers, and streams. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and his skills in building and carpentry were evident in the home he lovingly crafted for his family on Storer Hill, where he dropped the logs that became their sanctuary. Frank was also an avid lifelong reader, and he expressed his musical talents through the guitar and harmonica, sharing melodies with family and friends.
Throughout his life, Frank was an active member of various Christian churches. He had a real commitment to his community, having served as a Selectman in Carthage. He was known for his generous spirit, always willing to lend a helping hand to family and neighbors in need.
Frank’s life will be remembered on Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. at the United Baptist Church of Peru.
