FARMINGTON— The Recreation Department will resume its After School Hours on Tuesday at the Community Center on Middle Street.

A few adjustments have been made to accommodate RSU 9 basketball sessions now being held in the gym, Director Steve Shible said Monday.

The gym is being used Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays by the school basketball program, leaving Tuesday and Friday for children to participate in the activities offered during After School Hours, he said.  In the past, the program allotted three days a week to high school and middle school students and two days a week for kindergarten through sixth grade to use the equipment at the Recreation Center.

This fall, the Tuesday and Friday time will be split between the two age groups but each will have a 90-minute spot, he said.

Starting at 2:15, the older students will use the gym for an hour activity planned to keep them moving before they can head downstairs for a half hour to use the computer lab, videos, board games, ping pong and Nintendo Wii program. The older students will then leave the Community Center because the two age groups will not be mixed together, he said.

The younger group will occupy the gym starting at 3:15 prior before having time to enjoy the activities downstairs before they leave at 4:45 p.m.

Any of the equipment on the gym floor can be used, including the batting tunnel on the stage, basketball, hoola hoops, mats and Pilates balls.

The games are appropriate for everyone, Shible said of the approximately 30-40 youngsters who can participate, free of charge, during the after school hours.

The two-day program will run through Mt. Blue basketball season, he said of the Recreation Department’s efforts to help the school program find courts for practice during the renovation/construction work taking place at the high school.
