LEWISTON — Round one of the Federal Hockey League’s five-game tryout in Lewiston went well.
According to the staff at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, the game between Akwesasne and Brooklyn, the FHL’s first game of the season featuring its two finalists from a year ago, drew a crowd around what they expected, and “everyone seemed to have a good time.”
Now a month and about 10 games into the season, two more FHL teams will invade the Colisee this week as the trial run continues.
“We have two new teams. We’re not going to see any repeaters during this series,” Colisee owner Jim Cain said. “I would call it a success if we had an equivalent number of people come to the game this time as we did last time.”
That might be a bit tougher without a presenting sponsor this time around, but Cain and his staff are confident that area hockey fans know enough about the series that a mixture of curiosity and a developing affinity to the product will help drive ticket sales.
“There’s enough information getting out there, and more people know,” Cain said. “We had quite a bit more thunder for the first game with L/A Harley as a sponsor, and they’re back for January’s game. But more people are aware. There have been a lot of people in here the past few weeks, with tournaments and such. I’m confident we can have at least as many people as we did the last game.”
It’s not going to hurt matters much, either, that fans of the Lewiston Maineiacs will have a chance this week to see one of their former players skate with one of the FHL’s visiting teams.
Todd Chinova, who skated with Lewiston in 53 games during the 2007-08 season, made the Danbury Whalers this season as a walk-on tryout player. A native of Connecticut, Chinova played in both the AJHL and SJHL in the two seasons following his stint for the Maineiacs. He did not compete last season.
Chinova had five goals and eight assists for 13 points for Lewiston in his one season under Ed Harding. He had previously played for Shawinigan and for Quebec, with which he won a Memorial Cup title in 2006. He has one assist in five games played this season for Danbury.
The Whalers are 3-3-0 in six games this season. Chris Seifert leads the squad with four goals and four assists for eight points. Devin Guy, Greg Holt and Kelly Miller have seven points each. Adam Blanchette, who skated for Quebec, Moncton and Gatineau in the QMJHL as well as for Waterloo in the United States Hockey League in junior hockey, is one of the Whalers’ returning defensemen.
Nick Niedart and Peter Vetri have split time in the cage for the Whalers this season.
The Whalers will clash with the Danville Dashers in Thursday’s contest at the Colisee. The Dashers, the western-most team in the league, are based in Illinois, and have gotten off to a rough start this season, posting no wins in eight games while being outscored by a margin of 73-38.
Brothers Shane and Kyle Heffernan lead the Dashers up front. Kyle leads the team with nine goals and 13 points in eight games, while Shane has added 11 total points. Justin Barr (12) and Michal Babkovic (10) are also in double digits for Danville.
None of the Dashers’ three goalies has a goals-against average better than 7.50 on the season to date.
Faceoff for Thursday’s second of five FHL games at the Colisee is set for 7 p.m.
