AUBURN — The Auburn/Lewiston YMCA opened its 2011-2012 Biddy Basketball season on Saturday. This year’s league features eight Junior Division squads and 10 PeeWee teams in addition to four Rookies entries.
Opening day action was exciting from the outset with the first game decided in the final minute of play. This season promises to continue the longstanding tradition of competition, learning, development and fun that has become the hallmark of the Biddy league over its four-plus decades of existence.
Junior Division
Leary & DeTroy 39, Pat’s Pizza 35 — With the game knotted at 35 and a little over a minute remaining, Leary & DeTroy closed with two late buckets to down Pat’s Pizza in the opening game of the season. Leary & DeTroy exploded with an 18-point fourth quarter uprising to erase a 25-21 deficit after three quarters.
Ethan Brown had 10 of his tea- high 16 in the final frame to lead the winners along with a strong seven points from Chantel Ouelette. Adding four apiece were Serena Mower, Khadar Heeban and Austin Brown. Lauren Jutris and Ethan Bosse each added two. Khalid Heeban contributed tough defense to the winning mix.
Tyler Swanbeck led Pat’s with a game high 18 points, including many from long range. Devaunte Rembert (six points), Dan Nalley (six) and Jade Perry (five) rounded out the scoring for Pat’s. Oceana Chamberlain, Josh Hamel, Josh Kaiser and Tyler Libby contributed outstanding hustle and defense.
American Concrete 28, Emerson Toyota 18 — American Concrete used a balanced scoring attack to pull away, topping Emerson Toyota in a defensive affair. American doubled up Emerson 16-8 in the second half to secure the win.
Patrick Luizzo, Tyler Morin and Grace Fontaine led the way with seven, seven and six points, respectively. Courtney Richard added four points and Nick Hartley and Mohamed Mohamed two each for the victors. Otis Caron, Hunter McQuade and Keegan Pelletier were other key contributors.
Jacob Kyajohnian led Emerson with six points. Adding four each were Storm Jipson, Alex Thompson and Jaden Legare. Olivia DuBois, Madison Thistlewaite, Robert Tremaine and Rosalie White played solid defense in support of the team.
Gee & Bee Sporting Goods 25, Hoop Basketball Camp 17 — Gee & Bee opened the fourth quarter down one and exploded with a 13-point effort to top Hoop Camp in another defensive slugfest.
Caleb Yarnevich led the way with a game high 11 points. Ryan Therriault added nine (five in the fourth quarter) and Giles Paradie contributed four fourth-quarter points to the winning cause. Jonah Crowell added one from the line to complete the scoring. Christian Beliveau, Kathryn Childs and Cameron Winslow also enjoyed strong games for the winners.
Hoop Camp spread the scoring out evenly. Piper Norcross led the way with four points. Adding two each were Jaelen Conley, Jahvon Conley, Brian Demers, Camden Poisson, Ryan Salk and Richard Thurston with Spencer Morrill adding one from the line. Taylor Depot was a defensive sparkplug for the Campers.
Platz Associates 44, Downeast Financial 39 — Offense was on display in the final junior match up of the afternoon. Every member of the team found the score sheet as Platz topped Downeast in a tightly contested, high-tempo match up.
Ben English led the way with twelve points, followed closely by Nathan Farnsworth, Teagan Galway and Emmy Lashua with eight each. Joel Stubbs, Julia Masters and Abdulwahab Mohamed added four, two and two respectively to complete a true team effort.
Hank Duval led all scorers with nineteen to pace Downeast. Grant Hartley supplemented the offense with eight points. Grace Beaudet and Sarah Sterling added four each, Jayson Taylor and Sofia Hartley both chipped in with two. Nick Davis, Katelyn Jipson and Kirsten Main contributed hustle and defense for Downeast.
Pee Wee Division
Sun Journal 33, Anthoine Financial Group 12 — Led by Jamaine Luizzo’s game high 16, Sun Journal outscored Anthoine 19-3 in the second half and cruised to a win in opening-day action.
Devonte Scott (eight points), Wyatt Morse (six) and Cayden Childs (three) completed the scoring for the SJ. Strong defensive support was provided by Andrea Demers, Elijah Demers, Emily Kramarz, Noah Peck and Ari Perry.
Braden Paradie’s six points led the Anthoine attack, followed by Nick Gagne (three), Jordan Cummings (two) and Olivia Ouelette (one). Excellent hustle was showcased by Lyndsay Adams, Anson Perry, Marshall Adams, Ella Perry and Meaza Paradie.
Hammond Lumber 25, Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli 20 — A 9-0 second period was the difference as Hammond Lumber outlasted Heidi’s. Hammond showcased a balanced scoring effort with Max Creaser’s 10 points leading the charge. Tyson Green added five and Brady Cox four. Cameron Langis, Michelle Cowie and Quincy Coachman chipped in with two each. Starring defensively were Liam Flynn, Aiden Hebert and Rylen Schenk.
Caroline Hammond was a force offensively for Heidi’s with a team-high nine points. Rounding out the scoring for Heidi’s were Emily Piper with six and Ben Poland with five. Providing strong support to the scorers were Dylan Bilodeau, Landon Cougle, Cameron Irish, Ryan Marston and Tyler Smith.
Morrison & Sylvester 13, Sam’s Italian Sandwich Shoppe 12 — In a closely contested defensive battle, Morrison & Sylvester held on to edge Sam’s. Joey Vallee scored the game’s first seven points and Ethan Chute added the other six to account for the Morrison & Sylvester scoring. Lock down defense and hustle were on display by Calvin Ames, Addison Dostie, Simon Hayes, Tyler Murray, Alex Thistlewaite, Cooper Watkins, Finnegan Thistle and Addison Chute.
Dan Milks led Sam’s with six points. Hunter Young added four and Matt Scholer knocked down two from the line in a fine effort. Nick Kaiser, Anna LeBlanc, Kora Martel, Ray Nichols, Madisyn Turcotte and Ben Webber provided hustle and playmaking.
C.B. Bachmann 14, Hahnel Bros. 10 — Bachmann outlasted Hahnel Bros. in closely matched contest. Dylan Sellinger led the way for the winners with six points in a balanced offensive effort. Hannah Chaput, Mike Chaput, Jack Hart and Tyler Jalbert each provided two points for the cause. Dominick Jacobs, Fiona King, Austin Sellinger and Caroline White contributed fine defense and rebounding in a winning effort.
Steven Parshall led Hahnel with six points. Adding two points each were Jacob Jackson and Luke Josephson. Leading the defensive charge were Tristin Blossom, Trevor Bosse, Declan Giroux, Matt Metivier and Ben Sirois.
Austin Associates 17, M&P Used Auto Parts 10 — In a well-balanced team scoring display, Austin Associates upended M&P to close out an exciting day of basketball. Lydia Celani’s five points led the way for Austin followed closely by Chase Martin’s four. Adding two each were Julia Berube, Caleb Davis, Zachary Jawer and Elizabeth Marcotte. Jason Brooker, Libby Forgues and Owen Hamel were defensive stoppers for the winners.
Corey Weirs had six points to top M&P. John Shea and Justin Bulmer added two each. Sam Courtemanche, Aaron Galway, Harrison Gray, Shane Kilby, Josh Murphy and Joey Shea chipped in with great hustle and rebounding.
