WILTON — For years, it served a purpose, but now the East Wilton Fire Station is beyond repair.
It will be taken down within the next two weeks, Town Manager Rhonda Irish told selectmen Tuesday.
The area will be leveled, potentially to expand the playground. Its use after the demolition is in the hands of the Recreation Department, fire Chief Sonny Dunham said Wednesday. Outside lights will remain for the basketball court.
The siren is down. The sign will come down, along with a map showing the East Wilton roads and streets at the time the East Wilton Fire Department was active, Dunham said. The items will be saved for their historical value.
Since the mid-1990s, when the department was decommissioned, the building has been used for storage. It previously served as a substation to the Wilton department. Only a few members of the East Wilton Fire Department are left, he said.
“It’s too bad, but it’s gone beyond repair,” Selectman Paul Gooch said at the board meeting.
