I thank Sheriff Kevin Joyce, our Cumberland County sheriff, who spoke truth to power when he called out ICE for its abusive tactics in the detention of a corrections officer recruit employed by his office. In the sheriff’s words, “We don’t do that as law enforcement officers.”
That phrase says it all. And the castigating response from ICE further underscores the abject failure of the ICE activities. They are not “keeping Cumberland County safe, arresting dangerous criminals…” They are disturbing the peace, not protecting it.
Sheriff Joyce drew upon his training, experience and expertise when he spoke out against their methods, and I am grateful he did so.
